About the Jubilee
“Jubilee” is the name given to a particular year; the name comes from the instrument used to mark its launch...
In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII called the first Jubilee, also known as a “Holy Year,” since it is a time in which God's holiness transforms us. The frequency of Holy Years has changed over time. The way in which Jubilee Years are marked has also changed through the centuries: originally the Holy Year consisted of a pilgrimage to the Roman Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul, later other signs were added, such as the Holy Door. By participating in the Holy Year, one is granted a plenary indulgence.
On January 21, Pope Francis designated 2024 as the year of prayer in preparation for the Year of Jubilee in 2025.
The theme chosen by the Holy Father is "Pilgrims of Hope" for the 2025 Jubilee Year. The focus of prayer, called for by the Holy Father, is for a world suffering the impacts of war, poverty, hunger, and the climate crisis. The Jubilee is marked by eight characteristics: Pilgrimage, Holy Door, Reconciliation, Prayer, Liturgies, Profession of Faith, and Indulgences.
Pilgrimage Sites
Bishop Vásquez has designated the following parishes and university centers Pilgrimage Sites during the Year of Jubilee beginning Dec. 29, 2024, through January 6, 2026.
St. Mary Cathedral Austin
Holy Cross Parish, Austin
Holy Vietnamese Martyrs Parish, Austin
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Temple
Our Lady of Wisdom University Parish @ Texas State University, Austin
Santa Cruz Parish, Buda
St. Joseph Parish, Bryan
Saint Mary Church of the Assumption Parish, Waco
St. Mary Catholic Center @ Texas A&M University
St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Lampasas
The Holy Year is marked by the offering of God’s abundant forgiveness through the granting of a plenary indulgence, a remission of the temporal punishment a person is due for their sins. The following, with the four foundation conditions for an indulgence, are the different ways to receive an indulgence:
Visit and Pray at a Pilgrimage Site
Perform a work of mercy or penance
Recitation of specific prayers (If you are homebound and cannot participate in pilgrimage)
"The great tradition of opening the Holy Door will begin when Pope Francis opens the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica on December 24, 2024. Other holy doors will be opened at the Rome basilicas of St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls. For pilgrims who cannot travel to Rome, bishops around the world are expected to designate their cathedrals or a popular Catholic shrine as special places of prayer for Holy Year pilgrims, offering opportunities for reconciliation, indulgences and other events intended to strengthen and revive faith."
The 6th Edition of the Diocese of Austin Prayer Book is available now! You'll find Prayers from Scripture and our Catholic tradition to help us during Jubilee 2025.
