The Sacramentary that we use is an English translation of the Latin Missale Romanum. Prior to the Second Vatican Council the Roman Missal contained the readings and prayers of the Mass bound together in one volume. Now, the Scripture readings are bound separately in a Lectionary and the presider (priest) prayers are bound in the Sacramentary. "The issuance of the third edition of the Roman Missal reflects a new understanding of translation principles known as formal equivalency. The desire is to provide a more beautiful and more exacting language of prayer." The Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, has been approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
